Burma Progress Updates

Burma (Myanmar) CP is currently operating in 10 sites across the north east of the country. There are currently HAARP funded outreach and needle exchange programs in the following townships:

  • Mandalay
  • Lashio
  • Muse
  • Tachilek
  • Mogok
  • Myitkyina
  • Pyin Oo Lwin
  • Phakant
  • Taunggyi
  • Yangon

With the expansion of the sites, the program is also reaching for more drug users and their sexual partners. To date the program is reaching almost 6,000 drug users (injectors, non-injectors and ex-drug users). It is interesting to note that Phakant and Mandalay are the two townships with the most number of drug users reached by the program.

The CP places a focus on gender issues and has employed several female outreach workers in places where there are a sizeable number of female drug users.

The program also supports the Myanmar National Drug User Network. Two meetings of this network have already taken place and a member of the network recently attended and provided valuable contribution to the Outreach Training held in Bangkok.

More details on progress made regarding Harm Reduction service delivery is available in the Minimum Data Set reports under Monitoring and Evaluation.
