Cambodia Progress Updates
Cambodia’s CP partners are Korsang, Friends International (FI), Khana and Family Health International (FHI).
Friends International is currently the only NGO in Phnom Penh that providing needle syringe program (NSP) services. HAARP is focusing on advocacy efforts with National Authority for Combating Drugs (NACD) to expand NSP services throughout the capital and the rest of Cambodia.
Korsang continues to reach street-based drug users with essential primary health care and psychosocial support services.
HAARP is working through FHI to develop local data that could support program expansion and coverage, including population size estimates.
The methadone maintenance program is expected to commence in June 2010. Several trainings and workshops have been implemented and a professional attachment of nurses and doctors in Malaysia and Indonesia studied the program.
The Government of Cambodia endorsed the Pilot Methadone Maintenance Therapy (MMT) program in May 2008 and following the establishment phase from June 2008 to June 2010, the first dose of Methadone was given on 1st July 2010. One year later in July 2011, there were 107 clients enrolled, of which 20% are female.
