China Progress Updates

The China CP is now operating in a total of 31 sites in Yunnan (19 sites) and Guangxi (12 sites) in southern China. The program provides a comprehensive package of harm reduction services for people who inject drugs including NSP, condom distribution, referral for anti-retrovirals, HIV testing and counseling, methadone substitution therapy, treatment of opportunistic infections, care and support and targeted education and information materials.

The China CP is implemented under the management of the National Centre for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention, a national body vested with responsibility for coordinating the response to the epidemic in China. Project offices established within Yunnan and Guangxi Public Health Bureaus are responsible for the main day to day management of project activities. At the county level, site level implementation activities are being delivered by county/city level Centre for Disease Control and Public Health units in close collaboration with county offices of Public Security.

Regular updates on HAARP activities in Yunnan are available via the project office website at www.ynaidsxm.com and through the China CP Quarterly Newsletter.

In 2009, nearly 6200 IDUs received harm reduction services in China as part of HAARP. Forty four needle syringe programs are in exisitence as of 2010. It is expected that 8000 IDUs will be covered during 2010-2011.
