Situation Analysis - Vietnam

Illicit drug use
The World Drug Report 2009 reports that opiates (98%) and amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) are the most commonly used drugs in Vietnam, among people treated for drug problems.

Prevalence of injecting drug use in Vietnam is an estimated 0.25% of the adult population, an estimated 135,305 injecting drug users (Mathers et al 2008).

HIV prevalence
In 2008, UNAIDS estimated that there were 290,000 people living with HIV in Vietnam, an adult prevalence rate of between 0.3 and 0.9%.

Viet Nam has a concentrated epidemic. To ensure that HIV does not spread further within or beyond key populations, prevention is essential.

In 2008 HIV prevalence among IDUs was an estimated 33.85% (Mathers et al. 2008) and the UNAIDS country situation analysis advocated for scaling up implementation of harm reduction, addressing stigma and discrimination, and ensuring universal access to services.
